Open Hack India 2010: Update and Feedback
Hello Hackers
It’s been a week since the Open Hack event in Bangalore and I hope you have all recovered. My sleep patterns are still a little mixed up and I have jetlag, but I wouldn’t trade my experience of the Open Hack India event for anything. Open Hack is one of my favourite things I do with the Yahoo Developer Network, and I have had the privilege to be a part of 9 out of 13 Open Hack events worldwide. I have attended all 3 we have hosted in Bangalore and this last one was by far the best Open Hack ever J
Everything about the event amazed me, from the amount of developers and how far they travelled to be there, to the quantity of food consumed and the number of hacks presented. The quality of the hacks was also fantastic.
It is you, the developers that we do this event for, and it is you that make the event a success. I wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for attending and making this one of the best Yahoo events we have every hosted.
Here is the blog post we wrote for the YDN blog. Make sure you check out the winners, and some of the cool numbers like food consumption and final registration numbers. http://developer.yahoo.net/blog/archives/2010/07/open_hack_day_bangalore_by_the_numbers.html
We would like love to get some feedback from you on the event, as that is the only way we can improve the event as we move forward. To this end, I have set up a feedback page on the pbworks. Please use the table or comments on that page to give us some honest feedback, good or bad. It will be greatly appreciated.
http://openhackindia2010.pbworks.com/Open-Hack-Feedback
We would also love to see some of the hacks move forward and actually get launched if possible. This may require help in terms of resources or hosting. Yahoo may be able to assist you with this. If you are interested in moving your hacks forward, make sure you go to our Hacks post OH page on the pbworks where you can list your hack and state the help you require. If you have any specific help with an API, you can also use the YDN forums which are monitored by our engineering Yahoos. Please also let me know if you have already started moving your hack forward, as we love success stories.
We will make the videos available as soon as possible. I will post the links on the pbworks site when I have them.
Make sure you check out everything YDN on our site: www.developer.yahoo.com
Also you can follow us on twitter for all the latest news and events at www.twitter.com/ydn
I will on occasion check in with you and I hope to see you all again at our next Open Hack.
Thanks
Open Hack India Day - 1
To register your hacks, please go to http://developer.yahoo.com/hacku/register
Please make sure you register your hacks by 10:am tomorrow. Ensure you put the full names of your team members, your team name, your hack name, and the technologies you are using. If it is a web based app, then provide the url, otherwise if a desktop app, then just the description. Make sure that the description is good as the judges will use that during the deliberation
The presentations for the tech talks are updated in the Tech Talks page
T -1 Day
Hey. We are not less than 24 hours away from the best Open Hack event ever!!!
A couple of updates.
Judges:
We have just announced the Judges
IRC
We will have a crew of technical support at the event, but we have also asked our teams in the US to help you. for that we have set up an IRC which will be active during the event. Here are the details
#hackday on irc.freenode.net
Basic info on IRC Chatting and commands - http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html
IRC Clients for Linux and using them -
http://puppylinux.org/wiki/archives/old-wikka-wikki/categorydocumentation/puppylinuxirc
IRC Clients for Windows and using them - mIRC is one famous client for windows - http://www.mirc.com Apart from that, several clients mentioned in the Linux IRC link above work on windows too(like gaim, Chatzilla, XChat)
IRC from Mac - http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/mac/ Colloquy is very user friendly, commonly used and intuitive among these
On all platforms, Chatzilla would just work coz its a Firefox addon.
And it doesn't ask too many questions. Also presents many commands like connecting to a network as links that can be clicked. Will be easy for first time users.
How to Demo
We have set up a few sessions at the start of the hack and also at the end to help you present your hack effectively to the judges. We will also have some hack clinics where you can work through your demo and get some pointers. We DO NOT like PowerPoint, so please do not use it in your presentation. Remember, you only have 120 seconds. Here is some more info on How To Demo
I will add some sore updates to this wiki today as and when they happen :-) It's all go here at Yahoo India right now as we prepare the last minute details for the event
If you are using a Mac, then please bring your dongle as we have a limited amount of spare dongles with us.
Thanks
Anil Patel

T -2 Days
Hello all. There is now less than 48 hours remaining before the big event.
I will send out an email to you all on the latest information and what you need to do. it's just been a crazy few days in preparation for the event
Registration starts at 8:00am on the 24th but we will open the door at 7:30am to ensure we can register all the attendees in time for the talks.
If you registered as a Hacker Guru, you are good to go for the full event, including the tech talks. The info geeks are only there for the talks.
We are also very excited to announce the band that will be playing on the Sunday night. There will be drinks and dancing and the well known local band will rock us until 7:30. The band is called Retronome http://chrisavinash.com/script/welcome.html
Thanks

T-3 Days
Hello All. We are just 3 days away from the Open Hack India event. Here are some updates
Prizes:
We have some amazing prizes this year for the Open Hack. we have a wide variety of Apple iPod Touches, Nanos and Shuffles, and we are very excited to have an iPad as a prize. We also have an x-box. But i know you hackers, it's not about the prizes, it's about the participation and the recognition from your peers. The prize is just a benefit :-)
I will send out an email to all confirmed attendees on what you need to do and bring for the event. This will also explain the registration process, key timings and the overall agenda for the 2 days. I would also ask that you respond to me by email if you are unable to attend the event so i can make your space available to others.
I will post a couple of polls today and will also post some exciting news about the entertainment we have planned for the event.
See you all in 3 days

Some Clarity
Hello All
I have been getting questions via email about a couple of things that from some of you and i wanted to just clarify some points.
We will not provide accommodation on the Friday or Sunday nights. On the Saturday night, there will be some quiet areas at the venue where you can grab a bean bag and nap. Most hard core developers however code all through the night :-)
You do not have to register or inform me about your teams. The Join a Hack Team forum is there to help you form teams if you don't already have one. If you have formed a team already, then you are good to go and you do not need to let me know. The only time you will register your teams is at the event on Saturday & Sunday when you register your Hacks.
We will provide food during the entire event for the Hackers. We have a full vegetarian option.
I will be posting more info on the talks and speakers today.
Thanks
Anil Patel

Update
Hello All. By now, I hope you have had a chance to look around this Open Hack wiki. Over the next few days, we will be adding much more information, including the full Agenda, some Polls, and more links to help you produce the best possible applications you can. If you have any questions, you can post a question on the FAQs and we will try and answer ASAP. I have added a commonly asked question about accommodation to this page.

Welcome Hackers
Thank you all for registering to attend the third Open Hack event in Bangalore. If you have received an email granting you access as a writer to this wiki, then you have been accepted to attend the event on July 24-25. You should have also received a confirmation email from Anil Patel.
This wiki is an informal channel for us to reach out to all the hackers and send you critical information such as agenda updates, technology updates, FAQ, Hacker Checklist... We will be posting all our communications here as well. Please use this site as your collaboration tool with us and with the other fellow hackers.

Should Info Geeks also be getting their laptops? (or is it optional)?
apatel@yahoo-inc.com said

The tech talks are a series of talks on Yahoo's open technologies, so you will not be coding and therefore a laptop is not needed
thanks

I side Lakshya.. I too want to attend only Tech talk because of certain constraints. But i got confirmed for "Hacker Guru".. Shall i change it? Is it allowed?
apatel@yahoo-inc.com said
at 11:23 pm on Jul 22, 2010
if you are registered as a hacker, then you can attend the talks and do not have to stay for the whole event. If you are registered for just the info geek sessions, then you do have to leave after the talks are over. So Lakshya and Saiganesh are both fine
thanks

I have got my confirmed ticket as an Info Geek, but, I want to change it to a Hack Guru..
(I was previously confused whether I would fit into the 'Hack Guru' as my experience in Hacking is limited, but, I know Java, C, Data Structures, JS, SQL, HTML, XML and Php )..
Many people who have Hack Guru tickets have expressed their interest to just attend the tech talks..
Can I exchange tickets ?
Thanks in advance
